Nichols - Bethel Methodist Church Cemetery

Odenton, Maryland

Reverend John R. Nichols and his wife, Elizabeth Wood Nichols, are buried in the cemetery.  Reverend Nichols was instrumental in the establishment and construction of Nichols Memorial Methodist Protestand Church, which stood beside the cemetery until 1962.

This page is a work in progress.  Cemetery transcription began Tuesday, April 14, 2020; this page, as of May 6, contains 409 transcriptions and 335 photographs.

This cemetery has been documented, and rubbings taken, with the permission of the appropriate authorities of Nichols-Bethel United Methodist Church, Odenton, Maryland.  This page is the result of the efforts of Michael and Sandee Calo of Odenton.

This site is dedictaed to the sacred memory of those who found their final rest in this small plot of ground, particularly to the infants and children whose time on this earth was too brief; and to the memory of three individuals whose identities - like that of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery - are known but to God:

Sadly, there are dozens of other people who found their eternal rest in this (once small village) cemetery whose identties are now known but to God, for their grave markers are so old and weather-worn that not even rubbings would reveal any information.

The Nichols-Bethel Methodist Cemetery, also known as the Old Bethel Methodist Church Graveyard, is located at the corner of Annapolis Road (Maryland Route 175) and Town Center Boulevard in Odenton (old maps show it at the corner of Annapolis Road and Lokus Road, but Lokus Road has been dead-ended due to the contruction of Town Center Boulevard and no longer intersects Annapolis Road).  The cemetery is over 160 years old, with at least one grave dating to 1856.  It is the successor cemetery to the extant Bethel Cemetery, once loacted in Admiral but now incorporated into Fort George G. Meade (information obtained from "Oednton The Town a Railroad Built" by Catherine L. Omalley, 1978, available from the Odenton Heritage Society.  There are several names prominet in the cemetery, including Disney, Hood and Lowman, among others.  The cemetery features all manner of grave markers, from flat bronse and brass markers to round-topped tablet stones to obelisks; there is even at least one metal grave cover, though it is nearly buried itself.  There are quite a few stumps of reddish-brown rock which were once markers, though now there is no possible way of knowing whom they once memmorialized.

The strange case of the man who seems to have been buried in two graves: Anthony A. Pokorny is memmorialized in two places in the Nichols-Bethel Cemetery - once with a Veterans' Affairs marker (flat, bronze, indicating his service and commendations) and again with a traditional, above-ground monument which cites his service as a Sergeant with the Maryland State Police.  In actuality, the markers are very close to one annother.

There is also the sad case of Elsie Minniear, who was born in 1907 and buried in 1978 and who went to her grave anticipating the company of her husband, Jesse, who was born in 1899.   The problem is that the flat bronze marker which contains Elsie's birth and death dates and Jesse's birth date does not contain a death date - two decades into the 21st century - for Jesse.  Perhaps he's buried elsewhere in this cemetery.

On a humorous note (I know, one doesn't usually associate humor with cemeteries): there are two graves, side by side; one is for Ethel and Charles Whittle and the other is for Beverly and James Wood.
