All aboard...!

History revealed

Construction work at Gate 1 of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland revealed 71-year-old streetcar tracks.  The crossties were in perfect condition, as though they had just been laid; this comes, of course, from being buried for nearly three quarters of a century under inmpervious surfaces such as cobblestones.
This jumbled pile of rail, broken water pipe, dirt and cobblestones revealed a signal circuit wire still attached to the web of the T-rail used for street trackage.
This closeup of the cut end of a rail shows the rail's cross-section and the depth of the web.  Also visible is a rail joint bolt, indicated by the arrow.
